I purchased the Panasonic DMR-EZ28 last April as a replacement for my ailing Phillips recorder and have been very pleased with it so far. I did experience one of the infamous freezes, but that was easily corrected with the reset button. As noted in other reviews, the response can be a little slow; I usually have to press record on the remote twice. The picture quality of recordings has been clean and sharp. I was initially disappointed that it did not offer 2.5 or 3-hour recording time options until I read the instructions -- always a good idea! -- and discovered flexible recording. The only thing that prevents me from giving this item 5 stars is the lack of an auto-chapter option which allows you to jump ahead in preset intervals. This isn't a big deal when viewing a standard length movie but comes in handy when watching something longer, especially on another player that may not have a 30x fast forward. I guess I will reserve my twice repaired Phillips for recording a miniseries. For everything else, the Panasonic does a great job.

I've had lots of success with Panasonic products. Unfortunately this isn't one of them. 1. The tuner is awful. Very poor sensitivity. I have a hard time receiving channels that other units, including a cheap converter box, have no problem with. 2. As noted elsewhere, it's really slow. 3. I've had to frequently reboot the unit, either with a power cycle or the reset button. This includes to fix it hanging when I try to record something. 4. While watching a DVD or TV, it randomly decides to display the information box in the upper right. 5. Customer service was less than helpful. This unit has pretty badly tarnished Panasonics repution in my eyes. I am almost ready to give up and buy a different unit.

Extremely slow starting(even with "quick start). Glacial response time to remote commands, sometimes with no feedback that it is fact doing amything at all. I have heard of lawyers in this economy reduced to washing dishes. One of them ought to start a class acion suit.
