I have tested Bose Around Ear Headphones (not the noise canceling version) and my Sony MDR-V6 beat Bose by far! Bose got a softer cushion and better response in the very low frequency at 16Hz, but Sony are far more consistent with the output level throughout the entire response range. 20-20000 hz on Sony sound all at almost the same level - very nice flat response Sony have indeed. It will let you hear all the things in your tracks the good and the bad of mastering - you can hear them all on Sony's. But with Bose the bass will sound better and that is it - nothing else! I am so happy I got the MDR-V6 instead of Bose! (When I got my Sony both were almost same price.)

This is a review of the Sony MDR-V6 headphones. I bought these hoping to be able to relax to my music while on a two week family road trip I recently took. My usual headphones (Grado SR60) provide wonderful sound, but zero sound isolation making them terrible for listening in the car or other noisy environments due to sound leaking in and out. So I was hoping these would provide enough isolation to block out the usual family/radio noise, while still providing excelent sound quality and being comfortable enough to wear for very long listening sessions. I found that, while these headphones don't have enough isolation to completely block out the sound of voices, they do muffle the voices enough to make them easy to ignore and difficult to understand. Still if someone is being obnoxiously loud they will still be a distraction with these headphones. I found the V6 to also be quite comfortable over a long period of time. The ear pads fit around my ears completely, but just barely. If I had slightly bigger ears, I suspect that these would offer a far less comfortable experience. At first the head band seemed uncomfortable, but after adjusting it I haven't noticed any discomfort. I have found the sound quality to be very good. The highs are very crisp and the lows sufficiently punchy for my taste. My first impression listening to these was that they were a little too "tinny" sounding, but after listening for a while I came to really like the sound. The sound is overall very smooth and calming and offers a lot of detail. That said, these are nothing like my Grados as far a sound quality is concerned. The Grado SR60s offer a far better listening experience and at a similar price point. So if you're purely buying headpones for sound quality and will be listening in a relatively quiet environment, then I recommend Grados instead of these. But if you need good quality headphone for a moderately noisy environment, then the Sony MDR-V6 is a good option.

I have owned two pairs of these since 1988. They were around $100 in 1986 dollars and well worth the cost then. They lasted about 10 years before abuse finally cracked them. I went without nice headphones for several years, I am very happy that they still sell this model, they are compact, have great range bass to high and put any of my other headphones to shame. They are by far the best value in headphones, kudos for Sony for keeping production running.
