I have been a happy user of sony mdr-v6 (twice since mid 80's) and sony mdr-7506 (twice again). thought I'd "step up" to the 7509hd headphones and was disappointed. I don't know about the original non-HD version of these phones, but the hd version made in thailand for me was a step backwards in sound for me. the plastic, echoy ear cups and further distant driver placement created a weird "hollow" sounding midrange. my friend, non audio enthusiast, said they sounded ok. so, I guess I could be too picky, but for over twice the price of the 7506 I was disappointed. even at the 7506 price I would probably have returned them! tone wise the 7509hd was lighter on bass, some complain the 7506 were too heavy or to light on bass?? treble seemed smoother, but the midrange echo or hollowness really distracted me. these might be good for higher volume musician monitoring headphones, but not for low coloration "wanna hear all the nuances" listening. again just goes to show all ears hear differently. suggestion, which I didn't follow this time: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY. after receiving my 7509's I went to guitar center and suprise they carried the 7506, not the 7509. maybe because of price point, maybe because the 7506 is more popular in proaudio industry.

I've used MDR-7506's for years - they are great! Saw the the re-designed 7509's...figured that a larger diaphram would contribute to more solid bass. I was WRONG. They are large, bulky, do not fit the head (ears) well, bass sounds like it is attenuated about 5db. Mids "Ok". Highs - bit thin, tolerable. Mostly plastic. I use the 7509's when mowing the lawn - the 7506's for critical work. Sony got the 7506 right the first time and have not screwed them up over the years (much more comfortable than Grados by the way). Save your $$ buy the MDR-7506. Purchased Aug 3, 2008.

These headphones are great. The isolation is great, the construction is really solid (all metal), and the audio quality is fantastic. Well worth the coin!
