when this printer works it is awesome but unfortunately i am on printer number three in less then one year. i just got number three yesterday and plugged it in and it is making an awful startup noise and says the usb is not connected even though it is so not sure what is going on - again. the first one started making a horrible noise when it warmed up. the second one said it had an open heat error and to cycle power... really frustrating. i have one of these at home and one at the office. so far, the one at the office is fine and i paid 199 for it. the one at home i got on sale for 99 at officemax online and am wondering if they sold me a refurbished unit that is a lemon. really love this printer and wish it would just work!

We ran into a few glitches trying to get this printer setup. We have had many prior printers, Laser and Multipurpose, so it is not as if we are newbies. The rear duplex cover came separate and the guide didn't show where this piece went and we couldn't get it to fit anywhere. When we called Samsung, they basically started to read what was in the guide. When I said, "But that doesn't say where the part goes," I was told, "Well, I don't know what to tell you." Even after giving the person the part number, the most he could tell me was "somewhere in the back." We had gotten that far on our own. In several instances, we had to refer to the manual, which is on a disk, and it was not helpful. We've heard great things about the printer and read glowing reviews, so hopefully, it will be a workhorse and a great replacement for my HP Laserjet, which died after about 10 years, but my initial experience with Samsung hasn't started the process well.

Considering its low cost, this is a fine printer. Mine ran perfectly, right out of the box. Networking was a breeze and it runs beautifully on a system with XP, Vista, and Linux (Ubuntu) computers. Print quality is excellent for text; I can read 4pt fonts with no difficulty. Even in the toner-saving mode, most output is useable as a finished product. Graphics printing is adequate but a person who needs to print very high quality monochrome graphics might prefer a different machine. Print speed is excellent for a printer in this class. The software has not manifested any bugs and offers a wide range of print operations and tweaks. I have fed various envelopes, as well as card stock up to 110 lbs without jams or misfeeds. On the con side, the life of the standard cartridge is pretty short so it makes sense to buy the big one when replacement time comes. As others have noted, the paper tray is a bit flimsy though for home use it should be fine. In an office setting, persons who refill the paper should be cautioned to handle the tray gently. The duplexer doesn't always get it just quite right. Perhaps five times out of a hundred the paper doesn't feed at the right moment on the second pass so that the top and bottom margins can be a bit off. However, considering that relatively few printers in this price range even have a duplexer, let alone one for which there is no upcharge, I would be a piker to complain too much about it. I researched low-end monochrome lasers pretty extensively before buying this one. In my relatively well informed opinion, it is best-in-class.
