Mine couldn't access the cable. The manual said, "Split the cable to accommodate this recorder." What arrogance! "I can't do my job, so you modify your equipment to suit me." My ancient DMR 50 had no trouble at all accessing the cable, and wasn't fazed at all when the cable went digital. Touching it, pushing the buttons, listening to it, I saw a tackiness, a cheapness, that is not the Panasonic I thought I knew. It also has a horrible playback picture. To make the disaster complete, the Panasonic phone tech hung up on me twice. It's sad to lose Panasonic, which for 20 years was the only reliable maker of DVD players and recorders. Finally, a comment about Amazon. When you buy something from an Amazon seller, you are at the mercy of the return policy of the seller. That is a flaw in this great company. If Amazon guaranteed a full refund with free return shipping for everything bought even from its sellers, it would earn many new customers and make more money. More than enough to offset the price of return shipping.

I bought this to replace a Toshiba DR410 DVD recorder that I bought last December. That recorder was great untill the end of May when it gave out. I checked around and then read an article on Cnet how this Panasonic unit records a much better picture than the Toshiba among other things. It was true. So far I am very pleased with it. Easy set up. I paid $165.11 plus shipping from a dealer on Amazon, but I see that some of their dealers are asking around $300.00 for it now. ( Panasonic sells this unit direct for $179.95 with free shipping). Panasonic states that their discs are recommended but I still find that Maxell DVD discs are the best. I use only -R discs. (No, I don't work for Panasonic or Maxell)

Completely satisfied with unit. 4-hr recording on DVD excellent. DVD-RAM disks work like a hard drive and you can watch another title on same DVD while recording or start recording and later start watching from beginning while the recording continues. 1.3x playback perfect for the history or science lecturers who speak soooo sloooowllllyyyy- it makes them sound almost normal.
