Good sounding computer speakers: JBL Creature III

The speakers that come with your desktop or laptop traditionally sound pretty terrible. Laptops especially have bad sound quality as they have to put speaker drivers in such a thin chassis, often in terrible locations. For example, the 13 inch MacBook Pro has two small tweeters that dire downward into the bottom case and leak sound out of the vent in the back. Let’s see how we can improve the sound quality of our computers with a reasonably priced JBL speaker system.
When the JBL Creatures first debuted, they were a hit as it provided great sound quality and eye-catching design. This is the third iteration of JBL’s Creature so have they improved upon it? Yes and no. They have maintained the Creature’s eye catching design but sound quality has suffered just a bit. This is because JBL decided to make the subwoofer only 3″, so low bass and bass impact have been compromised for a smaller sub enclosure. This makes the speaker system more compact and easier to fit on your desk.
Reviewers are impressed that it still sounds good for its size. If you’re looking for a speaker pair, JBL speakers, like the Creature III might just be the solution for your cramped desk or office. There are physical buttons on one of its diminutive tweeters to control volume. These work well but seem cheap as they’re made of flimsy plastic painted chrome.
Overall, the JBL Creature III offers much improved sound over stock speakers and its eye catching design will let you display them proudly. Hopefully JBL will bring back the larger subwoofer for better bass response in the next revision of the Creatures.
