Fill your home with sweet music

If you have a sizable home, it can be difficult to get music into every room of your house or apartment. Most people usually store their music on one centralized server or computer. While you could move your laptop, iPod or other music player to each room and plug it into speakers, it is a hassle. If you have a wireless network in your home, there are simple solutions like the Sonos and Apple Airport Express that allow you to stream your music library over your network to any room.
Although an Airport Express isn’t cheap at $99, its many functions make it worth the price. It acts as a stand alone router, multi zone stereo receiver/music streamer, and a range extender for your network. It works especially well if you already have an Airport Extreme. The Airport Express comes with a 3.5mm headphone jack on the bottom of the unit that allows you to hook it up to your stereo. You’ll need an adapater if your stereo’s inputs are RCA jacks. On your main computer, you can use iTunes and designate which speakers to use, allowing you to control which stereo in the house receives the music. Apple has also introduced AirPlay, which allows you to stream your media, including music and video, over the network to any AirPlay compatible device, like a stereo receiver, iPod speaker dock, or the AppleTV. You can even control your music library with a free application on your iPhone or iPod Touch.
Sonos also makes a great product to stream your music over your network. Although it is even more expensive than the Airport Express solution, it is more seamless and allows you to live outside of the Apple ecosystem. You need a ZoneBirdge or ZonePlayer to be connected to your wireless router and then place a ZonePlayer in each room you want to stream the music to. It comes with a slick touch interface remote. If you have an Android phone, iPhone, or iPad, Sonos has applications for each device that allows you to control the music from your home.
Although I’ve only covered two mutli zone stereo receiver solutions, these are the simplest ways to get music to multiple rooms in your house so that your music never has to stop.
