I have found the Targus Notebook Coling stand to be very effecient and worth while for the price. I had previously purchased a UMB Drive powered stand that was completely unacceptable and this unit fits my needs perfectly.

I've had this notebook stand for more than 3 years. I originally purchased it for my 17" Dell XPS 2 because I liked the angle it put on the keyboard. I then got a MBP 17" and I _needed_ the stand to control the heat. Last year I traveled 160K miles and took it with me everywhere. When I take my laptop out of my backpack, I always set up the stand. It just works. I highly recommend this stand.

I have been using this notebook stand for over two years now and absolutely love it. I didn't want to buy the types that use a cooling fan. After all, those fans will eventually become noisy and break down - which will defeat the purpose. Pros: This stand does what it's meant to do. Although it's made of a strong metal, it is light, collapsible for travel, sleek, and very well constructed. Its adjustable telescopic arms accommodate laptops up to 17". It raises the back end of the laptop 1.25 inches off the desk in an inclined plane. As a result, the unit stays substantially cooler, and the fan doesn't run nonstop. Also, because of its inclined orientation, it noticeably improves the ergonomics of typing and viewing of the screen. Cons: Considering the amount of time that it's been in the market - a few years now - it's a little pricey.
