Sent my daughter to college and there wasn't room in her car to send her old HP inkjet. Told her to buy this All-In-One from the local Fry's on sale. Lasted most of the year on one set of ink cartridges and then after having been stored in a garage all summer, fired right up this fall. She got the network printing working on their LAN, so she can print from anywhere in her dorm or on campus. She also doesn't have to loan her laptop to suite mates that need to scan something.
She used it to print 200 US flags and 80 4" logos for a theatre production and it didn't have a single jam or bad print.
Her roomate has a dedicated answering machine, so we haven't tested that or the faxing, but printing from the built in memory card reader is handy too. -

After several months ownership this piece of equipment finally got me so frustrated I wanted to write a public comment. (1) It won't fax overseas. Even just to fax one simple piece of paper to another country. It seems so sensitive they fail repeatedly. (2) It won't work as a network printer, wirelessly OR wired. I have spent multiple hours over several days over several months trying to get this darn thing to run on my home network. It works as a direct USB printer is all(!). I have run my own software company for 10 years so I am 'IT-literate'. I even ENJOY solving IT problems - normally. But the MFC-685 has done nothing but frustrate. I have sought all the available software updates and installed/uninstalled the software using both Vista and XP Pro machines multiple times. Enough is enough. I refuse to spend even more hours to get this piece of hardware to work correctly. Brother, you've lost my custom. I know I should have bought a darn Lexmark again. My advice - AVOID the MFC-685.

First of all the fax does NOT work if you have a digital phone bundled with for example comcast cable/modem. Wireless took forever to work with my router. THEN the ink started flipping out not showing that I had installed new ink cartridges, tearing through expensive ink, not printing in certain colors though I had just changed the ink! Very frustrating. It is cheaply constructed so that you have to change paper all the time and the heat of the item not having a bottom to it could be a fire hazard. I already have to replace the thing and have not had it a year! I dread starting over and don't know what brand is decent. Notice the don't sport this model on office depot online anymore which is where i got it from. ugh.
