I have had the same issue with my Sharp. When I can get the tv to turn on, sometimes after 30 tries or so. yes patience is helpful. I have found a way to keep it working. Go to the menu button on the remote, when the setup appears, look for the option 'back lighting' on the setup option. turn it to Zero. this is the back lighting not the screen. then go to the brightness and color options and turn them up. This works for me. I can now turn the thing on consistantly. Granted the back light option is gone. I suspect the back light has something to do with the issue of the Please wait then the black screen. My set started to be unreliable at about 18 months. I did not contact Sharp, I was out of warranty. The TV I had before the Sharp lasted for 14 years. I don't plan on purchasing a Sharp product again. I hope this works you.

I used to be employed by an electronics retail store. When I got ready to buy a flat panel TV, I really wanted a samsung, but settled for this model because of budget. After a 1 1/2 years of use, I too am having trouble with the backlight. It just goes dark religiously at start up every time. After about 30 minutes of hassle (beating it) it will generally stay on for the rest of the day. Luckily, we bought the extended warranty, and will probably be getting a store credit to get a new model. Hopefully, a samsung.

like many others, I had trouble with the LC-32D40U. For the first twelve months, the set was well behaved and performed well. However, not one week after the year's warranty expired, I began to have the same problems as others, in terms of powering the unit up but seeing no picture. I contacted Sharp who suggested taking it to a nearby repair center, which I did. Luckily, I had a warranty extension through my credit card provider, so I only had to front the repair cost (and was later reimbursed). Not six months later, however, the problem recurred. I telephoned Sharp and expressed my discontent, and they authorized a replacement with a different model. Unfortunately, I've been without my HD TV since March 1 (so more than four weeks!), and expect to be without it for at least another week. I did have to kick up some fuss with Sharp and had to have them escalate it. To give them some credit, they were clearly aware of the problems with the 32D40U, as I didn't have to ask more than once to have the unit replaced with another model (of the same size). They were also willing to continue repairing it at no cost to me, even though it was out of the warranty period. Obviously, that wasn't acceptable. I had such high hopes of the 32D40U, but while the 32D43U (the replacement) has better reviews, I'm still somewhat nervous given my experience with the original unit. If you're having trouble with this model, call Sharp, and don't take "no" for an answer.

This TV is just a pleasure to look at. The screen looks great even in a brightly lit room and shows no glare at all from reflections on-screen. I only have two very minor complaints. First, the remote isn't great. It's not very intuitive to use I find, and although it is supposed to work with the Samsung AnyNet DVD player I got with it (DVD-1080P8), it is terrible for that (it doesn't even have a "menu" button for the DVD play menu). So I just use two remotes instead of one. Not a big deal. My second complaint is even more minor. There are many inputs in the back of the set (which is excellent), but if you need to change the input source channel, you often have to scroll through several options to find the correct one. It would be handy if it could autodetect what is plugged in and what is providing a signal, and skip those channels that are not powered up. Overall, a very good set and it looks GREAT.

First off, I will need to connect the TV to my aerial to see how it works with true HD. With my ordinary Comcast box, it looks just fine. Its not blurry or anything like that. Some folks reported a problem with sound, but that was not a problem for me. The manufacturer may have fixed that problem. I had the TV delivered in the Oakland area and the delivery was uncomplicated and arrived a little earlier than I thought it would. The only downside is that "Dirty Jobs" is a lot grosser to watch, because now I can *really* see the poo in detail that I had not enjoyed (cough) before.

Had this TV for about 1 month now. Got at BJs, delivered for under $1200. Set up pretty simple. I used the THX Optimizer which is found on most Lucas DVDs such as any Star Wars. So far, Id say the picture is great. Normal cable is what it is, its ok. But I have HD programming and a PS3, which I use for Blue Ray disks. HD looks great! Ive seen so many posts on the net that say 1080 on a TV less that 42 in is not noticable...well, thats BS. I can see a huge difference and the HD and Blue rays look very nice. Also, with 5ms response time, I have no blurring or ghosting when I game, and I play a lot of fast race games. Pros - Great picture and easy to set up. Cons - Only one so far is the remote needs to be aimed right at the TV or it wont work. If a 40 In TV will fit your needs( I have a 800 SF apt, and this TV is a perfect fit), you cant go wront with this TV.

I've had this 1080p/20000:1/5ms/60Hz LCD for a week and my initial experience is extremely satisfactory. It performs as advertised for HDTV, DVD, & PC (haven't tried gaming yet). Works great in a brigth room. No pixelation in fast scenes. Easy access menus. Plenty of inputs for my needs. Looks great. After offers and coupons, my total price at a local B&M store was $1,356 including the LCD, a sleek Samsung 1080 up-conv. DVD player, a 4-year extended warranty and taxes. Can't complain! Minor cons: Below average sound. Remote control must be carefully aimed at the front of the TV, very narrow angle of operation. Bottom line: If a 40-inch screen size is enough for your viewing needs, this unit holds its own against any other top competitor brands in this category.
