I have owned many CD players over the years, and I prefer a single CD player. So I have been using DVD players as CD players for a few years. I bought this player because I like shuffle play. At first it would not play CDs that I made on my computer. I turned off the ESP feature, and now it plays everything. It sounds better than a DVD player too. I am quite picky about sound, and I like it.

It is a nice cd player, but very phiniky. Has trouble reading alot of cds, especially if there if fingerprints on them.

The Teac CD player performs as expected and has advantages over minimum cost DVD players in normal usage: the convenience of knowing which track is playing and setting it to play a sequence of movements.

I was in the market for an SACD player after my Sony DVP-NS500V stopped seeing the SACD layer on hybrid discs. I could plunk $150 into repairing it, or into a new system. I read reviews on various units, and the Pioneer DV-578A-S for $100 sounded great. When I compared it to the DVP-NS500V however, the spatial resolution and tone quality sounded more like a CD. I suspect this is one of the machines that has a chip to convert the DSD data into 96KHz PCM for D/A conversion. Sony/Philips were fools to allow such downsampling in their DSD licensing; it dilutes the DSD/SACD trademark. Someone should initiate a class action suit or legislation to protect consumers. The Denon DVD-1920 was a candidate, but I discovered that it converts the DSD data to 192KHz PCM for the Burr-Brown 24/192 Audio DACs. This shouldn't be allowed. I found my way back to Sony, with the new DVP-NS3100ES. It is in their high-end ES consumer line, but not their budget busting DVP-NS9100ES. The sound is much better than on the Sony DVP-NS500V. It is breathtaking in its clarity and realism and spatial detail. The RCA Living Stereo reissue of Heifetz playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto has, in this DSD technology, better sound that Hilary Hahn gets from DGG's 96k recording fifty years later. My early production unit has a firmware glitch that causes occasional 1 second pauses in SACD playback. I need to get it back to a Sony Service Center, but the generous 5 year warrantee gives me plenty of time to do it.

If you've gotten this far, then you've read the technical specifications and they are state-of-the-art. This is one of the best SACD players on the market and SONY knows it stuff in this department. I love this player, as there are very few buttons to learn to use and the player remembers everything! If you take a movie out and place it back, it actually remembers where you left off! The only drawback is that it takes a few seconds longer than most players to recognize the format, but that is such a small price to pay!

Tascam products are often found in radio station studios where an application can tolerate good quality pro-sumer gear. The dirty truth is that the 'professional' CD players that once appeared in broadcast were outrageously expensive ($1600 +) and often less durable and reliable than consumer products. This unit went in to a radio station production studio where application specific start/stop/cue controls are not as critical as in the air studio. It has done a perfect job of reading heavily used (i.e. scratched) studio CDs. It has no trouble reading a well-burned CD-R and comes with the bonus of reading MP3 files, too, which some guests often bring to a studio. Of course, rack-mount is the way of the road. How durable it ultimately proves to be remains to be seen, but Tascam generally holds up much better than the average bear.

This unit has difficulty buffering data in what is called ESP (Electronic Shock Protection) mode when playing back CDRs burned as an audio CD. I'm guessing it is a software issue with that feature. ESP mode is on by default when you place an audio CD in the unit. When it is on, it has random issues with playback of CDRs; skipping, hanging stopping. You have to physically turn it off (ESP Mode) with the remote (no button on unit to turn it off). When it is off, the playback of CDRs has no issues. There is nothing in the documentation (unit manual) that recommends or suggests that this is a problem; I have confirmed that it is. I checked the documentation from front to back, including the trouble-shooting section. The trouble-shooting section has a heading of "Audio Skips" but does not reference ESP mode to be a problem. The unit does not seem to have the same issue with store-bought audio CDs in ESP mode (at least the few I tried and I did not try it for long as that is not why I bought it) , just CDRs. And it is a random issue, it did not show problems for a few weeks with the second unit I got that NVS replaced because it did it in the first five days with the first unit. I can only assume that it is not my CDRs or how I make them because they are high-quality TDK CDRs and they have no problem running in any other CD player I own. Here's another strange twist. I burned an MP3 disk of the same songs and put it in the player as it does say it plays MP3s. The documentation does not say whether or not ESP mode is on or off when playing an MP3 disk. I assume it is off because it plays all MP3s without any issues. As long as I keep ESP mode off or create MP3 disks, I am able to use this player as I had intended for CDR playback. I'm disappointed in TASCAM as I have used their products in the past without bugs or issues. If I had a chance to pick another player without the hassle of NVS customer service I would have done so but they did not give me that option. In fact, they were not customer friendly in the slightest and wanted to blame me rather then try to resolve the issue to my full satisfaction. Not once did they offer me suggestions or options. In fact, they berated me and accused me of perhaps not knowing how to operate a CD player when I told them the second player had also started malfunctioning. And they did this after replying to my second email (five days after the first) because I mentioned that I would not give them a favorable reiview due to their lack of response. I have thousands of dollars in audio studio equipment that I have had and continue to have for the last twenty years, so I am confident that I know what I am doing and I know how to operate a CD player. This is the only piece of equipment I wish I had not experienced in all these years. I would prefer not to have it and have something else, but I am able to work around the ESP bug that it has and keeping it is less hassle then returning it for a third one from NVS (only option they gave me) that will likely have the same bug. So beware. It works but has issues with the ESP feature.

We operate two dance studios, our Cd players are used every day. Just play, some fast forward/return when the girls practice a certain move. I own(ed) a total of four of them, and considering that we use one at each studio, that means each current unit is a replacement. I added the replacement plan after the 2nd failure, which paid for itself for number 3. Number 3 is failing now again, too. Yes, I could get it replaced again, but since that means that I have a dance studio for one day at least w/o a CD player, I am switching brands now. The play button stops being responsive, its not stuck, but the intructor have to hardpress it several times to get it to play, and after a while (based on 2 previous failures), even that won't trigger a response anymore. Can't say anything about cue or any other features, as we don't use them. I thought a DJ system is built for heavy use, well, this one isn't.

I own two, use them for mixing. Allows you to cue the CD plus raise/lower pitch etc...(see product description)They have never skipped or scratched my CD's. For beginners this product is great and as bonus there cheap.(in price)I own several Stanton products.(turntables)I am happy with them and feel comfortable recomending thier products.

I have used this for only about 2 months for my business. It worked great until this last week. I'm getting a delayed start time and much skipping. I am no longer able to use it for my business because of it's inconsisitency. I didn't receive any warranty or trouble-shooting information with the product, only basic operational instructions. So, now I'm in the process of tracking this information. Hopefully, this can be resolved satisfactorily (and quickly)! If so, I'll certainly upgrade the rating!
