After my old receiver broke down (which was just a bad radioshack model)I went looking for a good receiver for a reasonable price. I came across this model and saw all the reviews all over the internet. I didn't know much about Onkyo, and had assumed they weren't good receivers. I was very, very wrong. This receiver is pretty much THE receiver to get if you can't afford a really expensive product, but still want a great sound. It amplifies beautifully with a rich and fantastic sound! It can go EXTREMELY loud, but I wouldn't recommend turning any receiver up so loud that pictures are falling off the wall, that would probably blow out your speakers, too. If you want a good deal on a receiver after your old one goes bad, this IS THE ONE TO GET!!! One last thing, I also have to mention the greatness of it's phono inputs, for people like myself who still love vinyl, its hard to find a newer receiver with phono (or one that sounds good) this receiver truly delivers with all its capabilities. This receiver is one of the best you can get without spending a lot of money. Onkyo has truly delivered!

For the past two years, the Onkyo 8222 receiver has served me well -- powering a pair of BIC bookshelf speakers with room to spare from a CD changer, DVD player, and gaming platform. No fancy bells and whistles from this unit, which appeals to the simple logic of "less complexity = less likely to break." Just good, clean sound from a 2-channel receiver with only the essentials. A small indicator light on the volume knob would have been a nice feature, but that's a nit-picking flaw. What continues to amaze me is the stable price point -- when purchased in 2006, the one-fifty-ish price remains unchanged in 2008. Quite the bargain! An excellent buy overall.

I purchased this receiver for use in my woodshop, which is in a basement. It is able to tune into radio stations with fairly weak signals as well as clearly driving a CD player, tape deck, and iPod. Programming the radio presets is quick and easy. The remote works for approximately 10 feet. Additionally, the rear of the unit is clearly marked so "set-up" was simple. Thank you Onkyo.

This is a pretty good system. I love electronic "toys", but I am not super high tech savvy. I needed a new surround system because my old one (total 150 watts!!!) crashed. I also wanted one that I could plug my PS2 into, because God Of War kicks quite a lot of butt in surround sound. Got it fairly inexpensively (with shipping, I think it came to $[...]. Set up was NOT easy, contrary to what I've read elsewhere -- it took me forever to get it to surround sound mode -- was having trouble with the back speakers being mute until I clicked it over to "multi CH SP" or something like that. Sounds simple, but it really wasn't. There is a slight hiss for the speakers that major tech guys will probably find annoying, but I don't really notice it except when there is a moment of silence, like between commercials or whatever. The instruction manual was not very helpful, but I finally got everything hooked into it, and I'm very happy. DVD's/CD's sound AWESOME on it, but you may need to adjust so that the bass is a little louder than the factory settings. The funny thing is, I haven't played my PS2 on it yet, but it should be just as good as DVD's. So overall, very happy with the system!

This receiver is pretty impressive on paper and visually by oogling at all the ports on the back. The biggest thing to note, I believe, is that the 3 HDMI inputs are "pass-through" and do not extract audio and play it through the speakers connected to the receiver! (the audio will only go to the TV!) You NEED a secondary cable for audio (for each HDMI input!) and then you must configure the receiver to pair the corresponding HDMI input with the audio source. For example, if I have my Xbox 360 connected via HDMI, it is total FAIL because the optical audio connector for Xbox only exists on the component out... so I must use the component output for the Xbox instead, and pair it with a TOSLINK optical cable setup on the receiver. While being an excellent receiver for the price, this single ridiculous gotcha makes the technology of HDMI near totally moot and could lead to some annoying workarounds as I have done for my home theater.

From the manual, page 29 "If you want to listen through the speakers connected to the AV receiver, in addition to an HDMI connection you'll need to make a separate analog or digital audio connection." That is, one of the high points of HDMI (the fact that one cable transmits both audio and video) is completely lost in this receiver, since a second cable is needed for the speakers to function. Furthermore, the unit has 3 HDMI inputs but only 2 optical audio inputs. TO me this doesn't make much sense...

I was considering this receiver for a home theater system but then I saw the amazon price and it was too good to pass up. The setup went great - results with Aperion Audio in wall speakers and a Polk sub were fantastic. Thanks for the great deal!

The sound quality is good but the speakers are way too big. I have had a problem with my receiver. I just got it installed yesterday and the best buy agent who installed it said that one of the ports for the speaker is not working. Also the satellite agent was not able to get any reception from the HDMI. So I am waiting to see if this too is a problem with the receiver. I plan to call amazon to replace the receiver.

I read the other amazon reviews for this product, and I agree on most, specially those that rate it between 4 and 5 stars. My only gripe is that when I received it and installed it, after two weeks of enjoyment it stopped working; concerned, I troubleshoot and went online to see if other people had experienced the same problems I had (the system stopped sending HDMI image and sound to the TV, from HDMI input signals), and it resulted no solution existed rather than send it back to the original seller or to Onkyo themselves; I had to go through the (awesomely simple) amazon returns process, and after receiving the replacement, and setting it up, everything worked perfectly and I'm the happy owner of this great system. I know it's not a high-end system, but for the budget I decided to spend in a HTIB system, and at the time of purchase, few options are better than this. I'm very satisfied with the functionalities, it's very future-proof and I happily recommend it to anyone interested.

Well this is my second surround system. First was a cheap Realistic to learn from. I went to the brick and mortar stores to listen to a bunch, then I settled on this Onkyo. Every thing was pretty simple, some people had trouble with the speaker mounting, I did not. I seen one review where a guy said that you have crank the power up to far to hear the speakers, well don't know what they are talking about. The only reason I give 4 stars instead of 5 is that when you spend this kind of money I just think they could give you 5 dollars more worth of wire. I bought a spool of 14 gauge wire and I'm happy I did. his system is great for the non techy home owner, I love it.
