Portable record player for vinyl lovers

Vinyl was predicted to have died out years ago but it’s still alive and booming today. Many vinyl lovers love the medium for it’s warmth, dynamic range, and holding something physical in their hands. Part of collecting vinyl is getting a nice record player. For those on the go who still want to enjoy their records, there are portable record players.
For those who have to scratch their vinyl itch on the go, you can get a portable record player from Crosley that are built to look like brief cases. Portable record players like the Crosley CR49 are completely self contained, with a tonearm, phono cartridge, and 45 RPM adapter right in the case. It also has speakers built in to play the records aloud. Unfortunately there are no audio outputs to use with better speakers. The good thing is that the CR49 can play just about any type of record. A CR49 can be had for around $120.
Although the Crosley player is good, if you’re a vinyl lover with more discerning ears, you’ll probably want to pick up an vintage record player instead. There are plenty of great options you can find being sold on Craigslist and other sites locally.
Here are some tips for checking the condition of a vintage record player:
- Make sure the platter spins freely. Turn on the record player, start the platter, and turn off the power and see how long it takes for the platter to stop spinning on it’s own. A well oiled platter and bearing assembly should spin for a good 30-60 seconds.
- Check if there is any visible damage to tonearm or cartridge. To check if there’s any damage to the cartridge, bring a portable magnifying glass to examine the stylus. If the turntable doesn’t come with a cartridge, you can use that to bargain for a lower price.
- Check if its cables are frayed or damaged. Old record players are hard to find parts for and may be difficult to open to perform repairs.
- Stick to known brands like Pioneer, Linn, Marantz, and Technics as their players have retained their value and sound excellent for their age.
