We bought the new Series 3 based on experiences of friends with the Series 2. The series 2 is good. The series 3 is junk. Our harddrive is apparently bad, but by the time we diagnosed it (6 weeks), it was out of the generous 30 day warranty. TiVOs response is too bad; "no replacement, no repair, no refund." After searching FAQ websites, I find that the series 3 is having all kinds of hard drive problems: gray screens, picture freezes, instant and repeated reboots. My advice is to not buy until they start installing quality components instead of the junk they are using. DO NOT BUY!!

Within the first month, the DVR started freezing and rebooting. The problem got worse and worse, and finally, after multiple calls to technical support, Tivo agreed to exchange the box. The replacement DVR was also defective (not even able to power up). Tivo refused to give me any refund on the box, saying all they could do was replace it again. I had prepaid for a year of Tivo service, and even though I cancelled the service after 6 months (after the second box failed), Tivo refused to refund half of the annual fee I had paid. Lengthy argument with a condescending, pompous supervisor only resulted in a refund for three months of service. I suspect that technical support knew (or should have known) that the first box was defective in the first call or two to them, but apparently they are trained to refuse to replace a defective box, instead stringing you along with ridiculous and pointless "fixes" (e.g. unplug the box and let it reboot for the fortieth time) that they know aren't going to resolve the problem. Of course, after calling them for weeks and weeks, you've passed the (obscenely short) 30-day return window. Bottom Line: horrendous customer service.
