Epson steps into the laser printer market with its EPL-5700I, a quality laser electrophotographic printer compatible with Mac and PC platforms. Resolution of 600 x 600 dpi is extendable up to 1,200 dpi with Epson's MicroGray technology for crisp, true-to-life images. It prints eight, high-quality pages per minute. The preinstalled toner is good for 6,000 pages; the photoconductor has a life of 20,000 pages. The EPL-5700I accommodates transparencies, legal-size documents, labels, envelopes, and much more. It comes with a standard, 150-page, A4-sized paper tray that also fits up to 10 envelopes for back-to-back printing. A USB port in the back makes connecting to other USB peripherals a snap. The EPL-5700I comes with a one-year parts-and-labor warranty.

    The printer fits perfectly in my small work space and is very quiet, quick, and trouble free. My initial set back has been cleared up now that there is a native driver for OS X. The print quality is very good and it prints quicker than many "faster" laser printers (ppm doesn't mean a thing IMHO).

    The EPL 5700i has very nice print quality, but Epson's Mac support is not wonderful. The print dialogs are unnecessarily busy and confusing. And no Mac OS X driver yet (two years after the release of Mac OS X).
