Energizer makes two fluorescent lanterns, the red model FL452WRBP and the green model FL450BP. I own both models. The FL452WRBP has a red plastic housing with a mirror reflector whereas the FL450BP has a green plastic housing with a white reflector. Both use four D cell batteries. The lanterns don't burn much energy so they last considerably longer than incandescent flashlights. But fluorescent lanterns are not super bright. They are, however, bright enough to see in the dark. You can't perform surgery with them, but you can take a bath with their illumination. I've used them during blackouts. They work. They are good for emergencies or camping. However, consider the big price difference: The green Energizer fluorescent lantern model FL450BP Energizer FL450BP Illumifold Lantern is only half the price of the red fluorescent lantern model FL452WRBP Energizer FL452WRBP Folding Lantern. Therefore get the green model unless you prefer the color red.

Walmart had these on sale for less than $5 right before Katrina hit. I bought one and then went back for 4 more. I was without power for 9 days and had one in almost every room of the house. They work great! The folding design allowed me to place it on the headboard and use it to read by at night. Another nice feature is the ability to turn on either one tube or both for more light. The handle makes carrying easy. Very versatile light but heavier than a flashlight. Uses 4 "D" cell batteries. Battery compartment is accessible with a coin.
