Took less than 10 minutes to setup our Mac and Windows laptops! It increased the speed of our internet connection!

I bought one of the D-Link DGL-4500 Routers when it first came out. This router was the most expensive one I've ever bought that was a non-enterprise router. The Gigabit Interface, OLED display, and the "Dual" band support for Wireless draft N was more than I could resist. At first it seemed great. The OLED interface was a little disappointing as it's not "Always ON", you have to press a button on the router to see anything on it. It does let you cycle through bandwith, IP, and syslog data with this display. D-Link made a lot of hinted promises when they released this router (like custom uploadable graphics for the OLED). It sounded like they were really aiming for the Gaming crowd. Unfortunately they have far from delivered and pretty much abandoned the owners of these routers. The hardware has plenty of horsepower, but firmware updates are virtually non-existant and when they are they seem to be causing more problems then what they fix or add. I honestly think I might have been better off with a 655, or something with open-wrt/tomato/dd-wrt on it. With the latest firmware I've resorted to putting it into "Wireless G only" mode, which has helped a little but it still seems that not more than a day or two goes by where we don't have to cycle the power on it.

I was reasonably happy with this router until it died suddenly, mid-raid last night (we play World of Warcraft). I was sorry to discover (a) it has only a one year warranty and (b) that warranty expired barely four months ago. D-Link would be more than happy to help me troubleshoot if I were willing to pay them - thanks, but no thanks. My cable company worked with me for free and we eliminated everything but the DGL-4500 itself as the source of the problem (router couldn't establish a connection with the cable modem and was stuck in "off-line" mode). Many other wireless router manufacturers offer 3 year or even limited lifetime warranties, so I will not be purchasing another D-Link until they catch up with their competition in backing their products. If you don't mind paying a premium price, then this was briefly a pretty little router with good wired performance and a so-so wireless range. I personally will be looking elsewhere.
