I've given some other computer speakers five-star ratings before. I'm going to have to go back and revise them down... or give these six stars. All the other high-mark reviews here are absolutely correct: these are great speakers. I heard about these on some popular high-tech podcasts. Then I heard them in person in a store and at MacWorld. I was on the fence, but decided to go for it. No regrets at all. My prior setup was a pair of BIC America bookshelf speakers hooked up to a receiver. (Yes, a bit overkill, but I wanted good sound.) The AudioEngine A2 speakers sound as good as the larger BIC's at only about 1/4 the size. These are quite simply the best desktop speakers I have ever used. No EQ needed -- I just play them straight out of my external USB audio interface (Edirol UA-1EX). The built-in amps have no annoying hum, a problem that bedevils many desktop speakers. I built little stands for them out of 4x4 lumber cut at a 10-degree angle so the speakers are angled slightly upward. This aims the sound right at me and gets the speakers off the desk. Consequently, the bass is good and the sounds seems to come from my monitor, not from both sides. Good stuff! You might balk at the nearly $200 price tag, but quality isn't cheap. Get these and you won't be disappointed!

I've had my share of speakers, different sizes/levels, all the way up to a $2,000 pair of MB Quarts. These little guys absolutely rock for the price. Very accurate, very balanced, on a wide variety of material. Obviously, given the size they're limit in very low frequencies, but they kick out a huge amount of bass for their size. I actually upgraded to the A5 speakers, since I wanted more bass, but couldn't get myself to return the A2s because I like them so much. Now I use them for traveling (nothing like rocking out in a hotel room) and generally around the house (parties, etc). Highly recommended.

But weirdly bass heavy. iTunes let's me eq so I can get a good sound from these speakers that way (I used the treble booster preset) , but that doesn't help with other non-iTunes musical content (music on Youtube for instance).
